Week 4 – Assignment 2: Human Variation and Diversity Activity
Instructions
Assignment Directions:
For this assignment, we will be exploring human variation. Choose one of the two topics below.
Option 1: Sex is a biological category (male, female), and gender is a more fluid category (woman, man, transgender). Using the interactive PBS map about global concepts of gender [webpage] to identify and then research another culture where there are third genders. Why is gender diversity important? Write a 3-page paper, incorporating course materials and one or more scholarly sources to support your points.
Option 2: Review the contents in the "Race is Not Genetic," "History," and "Lived Experiences" tabs located on the 2011 American Anthropological Association's RACE: Are we so different? [webpage]
After reviewing the content on the site please discuss how the site's information on:
- genetics,
- the history of race, and
- lived experiences
bettered your understanding of human variation.
Be sure to address each of these three subject areas in your paper, and in closing, address why misconceptions about race are popularized in the mainstream.
Please write up your reflections in a 3-page paper, incorporating sources from the website and one or more scholarly sources to support your points. Be sure to cite all sources!
