For this assignment, you will discuss the 13 disability categories (autism, deaf-blindness, deafness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, and visual impairment) as outlined by IDEA. You will also address the definition, characteristics, and learning strategies for each category.

Artificial Intelligence Integration (AI): You may incorporate the use of Artificial Intelligence for the “general teaching methods/effective strategies/technology interventions” portion of this assignment. Please note this is optional and ONLY applies to this specific portion of the assignment. Microsoft Copilot is the only AI tool approved for use within this course assignment. You are required to cite Microsoft Copilot both in-text and in your reference section if it is used to assist in completing the approved portion of this assignment.

You have the choice of writing a paper or creating a PowerPoint. You also have the choice of age range: early childhood, elementary, high school, or college.

The Exceptionality paper or PowerPoint must include the following:

  1. The disability name, definition, and eligibility criteria for the federal definition from IDEA for each category.

  2. The disability characteristics of each category as noted in your textbook or another source (make sure to cite source).

  3. General teaching methods/effective strategies/technology interventions appropriate for the age range you chose - at least 5 for each disability.

  4. Professional writing – Correct spelling, grammar, capitalization throughout your paper or in the notes section of your PowerPoint.

Paper specific requirements:

a)     13 –20 pages of content (not including title and reference page.) A title page, at least one full page for each category, and reference page must be present.

b)    Include an introduction that includes the age range you chose and explains what IDEA is about.

c)     Appropriate APA formatting throughout. Include headings. No abstract is needed.

6.     PowerPoint specific requirements:

a)     At least 41 slides: title slide, reference slide, and 3 slides for each category that includes one for definition, one for characteristics, and one for strategies.

b)    Must include a notes section that explains each slide and includes your citations.

c)     In the notes section of your title/intro slide, explain what age range you chose and explain what IDEA is about.

d)    Citations in notes section and reference page in APA format.

e)     Must be visually appealing with bullet points only (no long text) and include graphics/pictures.

7.     A minimum of five citations/references.
